A Wonderful Fall Meet Weekend at the Railroad
This past weekend was another exciting and memorable time around the railroad as we hosted our annual Fall Meet. The event brought together a fantastic mix of familiar faces and first-time visitors, all eager to share in the fun and energy that make this tradition so special.
This past weekend was another exciting and memorable time around the railroad as we hosted our annual Fall Meet. The event brought together a fantastic mix of familiar faces and first-time visitors, all eager to share in the fun and energy that make this tradition so special.
From the moment the first whistle blew, the railroad truly came alive. Throughout the weekend, nearly a dozen trains could be seen running at any given time, filling the air with the sound of steam, laughter, and good company. Whether it was watching the trains glide along the track or catching up with friends trackside, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
Saturday was a highlight, as always, with our annual cookout. The food spread seemed endless—enough to feed an army—and no one went home hungry. It was the perfect opportunity for members and guests to gather, share stories, and celebrate another successful year together.
A very special thank you goes out to the dedicated members who spent Wednesday through Sunday morning helping set up, standing guard, and making sure everything ran smoothly. Your time around the campfire, keeping everyone entertained and the railroad safe, truly made the event shine.
We’re grateful to everyone who joined us this year and helped keep this tradition alive. If you couldn’t make it, we hope to see you at our next event. Until then, happy railroading!

What an incredible day we had on Saturday, October 4th, as the Conyers & Hightower Trail Railroad roared back to life for our 2025 season! Throughout the afternoon, our steam, diesel, and battery-powered locomotives delighted riders of all ages, carrying nearly 700 passengers around the railroad in just three and a half hours.
This amazing turnout wouldn’t have been possible without our dedicated volunteer crew and all of our wonderful visitors — thank you for making the day such a success!
We’re not done yet! Join us for our final run day of the year on Saturday, November 1st, as we keep the Halloween fun going a little longer. The railroad will be decked out with festive decorations, and costumes are highly encouraged. Trains will be running from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m., so bring your friends, family, and Halloween spirit for one more unforgettable day on the rails!

Steam Engine Inspection Day for Saturday, September 13, 2025
On Saturday, September 13, 2025, our steam engines underwent their annual inspection. Each year, these locomotives are carefully checked with a hydro test and a detailed boiler inspection. The process involves filling the boilers with water and applying pressure to confirm that the tubes are tight and leak-free. While straightforward, this test is essential to ensuring that our engines remain safe, reliable, and ready for operation.

September Kicks Off a Busy Season at the Railroad
It’s hard to believe we’re already in September! This time of year always brings an extra level of excitement to our railroad and our hobby. Fall is when things really ramp up—our Fall Meet, Public Run Days, and several important projects are all on the calendar.
We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at one (or many!) of our upcoming events. To make it all possible, we’ve scheduled a few work days to get the railroad in top shape and to finish up some ongoing projects.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at one (or many!) of our upcoming events. To make it all possible, we’ve scheduled a few work days to get the railroad in top shape and to finish up some ongoing projects. Here’s what’s happening over the next few weeks:
Annual Boiler Inspection - The annual inspection takes place on Saturday, September 13th.
Clubhouse & Workshop Project - The roadbed for the shop track coming off the mainline needs some work, along with putting in a cinderblock wall, which has already been started. We will have a bobcat onsite to help bring in any additional material, but a lot of the dirt and roadbed work is in place, just needs to be finished before we install track panels. A right-hand switch needs to be built along with a few panels and a track receiver that will be mounted to the cinderblock wall. The plan is to work on this on Saturday, September 20th.
East Loop Drain Repair - The major repair of the east loop drain is in place, but needs some finishing work and clean up around the area to complete this project now that the concrete has had time to set and see how the runoff water is flowing through the new drains. The plan is to work on this on Saturday, September 20th.
Track Maintenance & More- We need to go around the railroad and make sure the track is in good running order for our run day, and make any necessary repairs. For those who have not been to the railroad in a few months, the “Grandma Line” is officially open and will be used during our next run day, so make sure you check it out. Work on the track is planned for both Saturday, September 20th, and Saturday, September 27th.
Storage Siding with Recharging Hook Up Track - We need to lay between 4 and 5 track panels using used rail to complete this project. This will be helpful for any of our Fall Meet visitors who need a place to plug in and recharge any element of their train. We will need some track panels built or rebuilt and installed. Work on this is planned for both Saturday, September 20th, and Saturday, September 27th.
Don’t forget that our Fall Meet is also just around the corner. In less than 40 days, the Fall meet will take place, so don’t forget to invite everyone you know in the hobby to come out and enjoy the railroad with us. The dates for this year’s meet are Thursday, October 16th through Sunday, October 19th.
East Loop Repair and More Continued on Wednesday and Thursday
Even with storm clouds rolling in on Wednesday, Wes and Ken pressed forward on the much-anticipated East Loop repair. Their determination was evident as they worked through the drizzle, making steady progress on the critical section of track that has been a focal point of recent projects.

In addition to tackling the East Loop, the pair also spent time repairing the electrical conduit between the Hightower Trail tower and the red container. This task required uncovering and assessing existing lines, then making the necessary repairs to ensure reliable power for future operations. While it might not be as visible as the concrete work or track installation, this behind-the-scenes effort is essential to keeping everything running smoothly.
Needless to say, Wes and Ken have been more than busy all week—balancing heavy construction with careful technical repairs. Their persistence and teamwork have kept the project moving forward despite the challenges that come with unpredictable summer weather.
A big thank you goes out to the team for everything they’ve accomplished so far. Each completed step brings us closer to seeing the East Loop restoration finished, and the excitement is building as we look ahead to the final product taking shape soon.

Progress continues on the East Loop Drain project, even with a few delays and adjustments along the way. The day started with forms in place, but—no surprise—concrete was running late. While waiting, Ken and Wes used the time to excavate the conduit from the high tower to the red container.

While waiting, Ken and Wes used the time to excavate the conduit from the high tower to the red container. Both ends are now uncovered, and about half the length is exposed. This will make it much easier to prepare for laying a new, larger conduit without risking damage to the existing wire.
Once the concrete arrived, they got to pouring. The mix was a little wetter than ideal, so they had to do it in multiple stages with breaks in between. Norm stopped by and pointed out that the ramp head wall wasn’t square, so that got corrected before we filled the blocks.
Meanwhile, Ken gave the green light on the culvert. We pulled the form—just in time, as the culverts were capped and, as the day came to an end, the skies opened up with heavy rain.
All in all, it was a busy day with plenty of opportunities for folks to jump in and lend a hand. We’re pushing hard to be ready for Saturday.

Well, it’s happened again — the drain in the East Loop has failed, which means the railroad can’t be used until a major repair is completed. This is the third time we’ve dealt with this issue, but the good news is that we now have enough experience to solve the problem once and for all.
Ken and Wes have developed a solid repair plan, and over the next couple of weeks, they’ll be working hard to get everything in place. They’ll also be looking for extra hands to help, so if you can lend time or equipment, your support will be greatly appreciated.
Here is a little bit of information regarding the plan.
Pipe Installation
The existing galvanized steel spiral pipe will be moved forward.
We will use some of the black corgated pipe we already have to add more ways for water to flow out of the east loop into the lower level.
Install a concrete head wall to secure the pipe. All concrete work will be reinforced with rebar for long-term durability
A scour pad with a turndown to prevent undercutting and erosion
Side walls will direct and contain water flow
Materials Needed
Concrete – Currently scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, August 19th
One load of crusher run
Labor, diesel, forming materials, and equipment – Already donated (thank you!).
Project Schedule (Weather-Dependent)
Friday, August 15th – Tracked loader into dig, grade, and move spoil for the new roadbed.
Saturday, August 16th – Grade and form, set pipe, backfill, and move soils/stone for the roadbed.
Tuesday, August 19th – Pour concrete, pull forms, backfill, and prep roadbed for track installation.

Grandma Line is now complete - July 26, 2025
After years of dedication by John Tuten and others, the infamous “Grandma Line” is now complete. The 250-foot project involves shifting the mainline traffic from running alongside the yard to moving through the woods. Today’s crew consisted of John, Wes, Calvin, Gene, Brandon, Kenneth, Brooke, Norm, Robby, and Scott.
This project could not have happened without the help of so many other club members through the years. Thank you to everyone involved.

The dog days of summer are certainly in full swing but working in the shade made the day productive for the crew this past Saturday. The morning started early with getting the club riding lawnmower up and running with a new battery with Robby getting things started on the west end of the railroad plowing through grass that was about two feet tall or taller in some places. Darryl took over and spent the rest of the day tackling the east end of the railroad having to cut some areas twice because things were so tall.
The rest of the day consisted of John T., Rick, “Bob Jr.”, Dave E., Robby, and Norm working on the Grandma Line. The crew got a lot done but fell 4 panels shorts of completing the project. The crew will be back out on Saturday, July 26th to finish the project and perform test runs on the new line. We invite everyone to come out for the big photo opportunity for this project as many of you know it has been a project of passion for John for several years and we want to celebrate the moment.

Before this can get started however we need to address once again the big drainpipe on the east end of the railroad which continues to show signs of washing again. We believe we have a plan to put in a permanent solution instead of the band aides we’ve had to do in the past. Be on the lookout for a big workday to get this repair done. This will need to take place before our next public run day.
Finally looking ahead to what is on the calendar our next club meeting will be on Saturday, August 2nd with our annual hot summer nights club fun night event on Saturday, August 23rd. The annual boiler inspection is scheduled for Saturday, September 13th.

Our next workday is scheduled for this Saturday, July 12th starting at 8:30 a.m. It appears that the goats have been on vacation this summer, as the grass is extremely tall and in need of cutting. If you have a riding mower and can bring it to the site to help cut grass that would be greatly appreciated. Our club riding mower should be operational but may need a little encouragement to get started. We are also looking to make big progress on the Grandma Line this weekend. John T has most everything ready for us to install the last 60 or 70 feet of track, and if we get a large enough group for the workday, we could finish the Grandma Line this weekend.

After years of work the Grandma Line nears completion
A small crew went to the site this past Saturday and worked on a variety of projects. The crew consisted of John T, Calvin, Kenneth, and the Howards. John T reports that he thought that Kenneth worked the hardest picking up limbs and debris along the track most of the day, while John H and Calvin braved the direct sun to work on locomotives. Meanwhile in the shade, John T lifted track panels and set the crush and run forms on the remainder of the Grandma line (except for the grade crossing).
We are almost done with the Grandma Line. Be on the lookout for a big workday push to finish the Grandma Line in the coming weeks. If all goes well and we have enough volunteers, we could finish the project in a single workday.
