With several projects happening at once, there are plenty of opportunities for members of all skill levels to jump in and help.

🐐 We could also use a few volunteers to help our "goats" keep the grass under control! If you'd rather spend some time behind a mower or string trimmer than swing a hammer, we've got a job for you too.

Whether you're swinging a hammer, moving materials, measuring, mowing grass, or just bringing a positive attitude, there's a job for everyone. Every workday helps move us one step closer to enjoying our new clubhouse, workshop, and railroad together.

At this point, the outer loop and Grandma Line are operational, but we encourage steam engines to go through the area slowly the first couple of times to make sure everything is smooth. The yard still needs additional cleanup and repair work before all repairs are completed and the railroad is back to full operation.

Another productive workday is in the books! On Saturday, July 11th, an outstanding crew consisting of John, Wes, Daryl, Grady, David E., and Robby continued the ongoing storm cleanup and railroad restoration efforts. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, the railroad is now approximately 90% operational.

The crew split the day between outdoor railroad repairs and indoor construction projects. The morning was spent outside tackling storm-related damage and focusing on track repairs throughout the property. We are excited to report that repairs to the Outer Loop in the woods have been completed, allowing trains to once again travel through this scenic section of the railroad. Additional work is still needed to rebuild one of the switches in the area, but tremendous progress has been made.

What a difference another workday makes! Friday marked a major milestone in our storm recovery efforts as the final large tree was removed from the railroad. While seeing the last of the major tree damage cleared is a tremendous accomplishment, it also revealed the extent of the remaining repairs that will be needed before trains can safely return to operation. With the debris gone, we now have a much clearer picture of the work ahead, including track repairs, grading, and other infrastructure that was hidden beneath the fallen trees.

On Wednesday, July 1st, more progress was made clearing storm damage throughout the railroad. By getting an early start each morning before the summer heat sets in, our volunteers have been able to accomplish a tremendous amount in just a few hours. Those cooler morning temperatures have made it much easier to tackle the physically demanding work, and the difference is becoming more noticeable every day.

The cleanup has continued with additional trees, limbs, and storm debris being removed, and the property is beginning to recover from the damage left behind by the recent storms. We still have a few large trees that will require professional removal, and we're continuing to work through those plans with a tree service. We expect to have more information after the July 4th holiday weekend.

The cleanup efforts at the railroad continue to make outstanding progress! Today, Wes and Dave E. spent the day on the property tackling the storm damage, and they made a huge dent in the cleanup efforts. Thanks to their hard work, even more fallen trees, branches, and debris have been cleared, and the railroad is looking noticeably better.

🚂 North Georgia Live Steamers Workday Update 🌳

A small but hardworking crew came out this morning to assess the downed tree situation on the railroad. While we're still reviewing quotes from professional tree removal services, the crew wanted to get a head start on cleanup and make some visible progress.

Today's volunteers cut up a significant amount of branches and created a large pile of debris that will need to be removed. They also cleared and disposed of numerous branches, logs, and other storm debris, making a noticeable improvement around the property.

We've also identified a couple of trees that will require professional removal, and we'll keep everyone updated as those plans move forward.

After further assessment of the railroad following the recent storms, we've discovered the damage is even more extensive than originally thought.

Multiple trees ranging from 12 inches to more than 40 inches in diameter have fallen across the railroad. Several sections of track remain completely blocked, and some of the largest trees will require significant effort and equipment to remove safely.

As crews have begun evaluating the affected areas, we've also found substantial damage to the mainline through the woods. Once the fallen trees are cleared, significant track repairs will be required before trains can safely operate on this portion of the railroad again.

The reality is that this cleanup effort is much larger than a typical workday project. Until the debris is removed and repairs are completed, progress on other railroad improvements will be delayed, and portions of the railroad will remain out of service.

Recent storms have left us with a major cleanup challenge at the railroad. Several large trees and countless branches have come down across our tracks, sidings, and operating areas. As you can see from the photos, some sections of the railroad are completely blocked and will require significant effort to clear before we can continue improving and operating the railroad safely.

In addition to removing fallen trees and brush, we also need volunteers to help with:
✅ Cutting grass and trimming weeds throughout the property
✅ Clearing brush along the right-of-way
✅ Hauling limbs and debris to burn or disposal piles
✅ General track and grounds maintenance

Whether you can run a chainsaw, operate a tractor, swing a rake, or simply help move branches, there is a job for everyone. Even a few hours of your time can make a huge difference.

The railroad is built and maintained entirely by volunteers, and projects like this remind us how important our members and friends are. The more hands we have, the faster we can get the railroad back into shape and continue working on all of the exciting improvements planned for this year.

This Memorial Day, North Georgia Live Steamers pauses to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. 🇺🇸

The second public train ride day of the 2026 season is officially in the books at North Georgia Live Steamers — and what an AMAZING day it turned out to be!

After a threat of rain leading into Saturday, the clouds cleared just in time for a perfect afternoon as the whistles blew and trains began rolling out of the station. The beautiful weather brought out huge crowds, and throughout the day we gave approximately 500 train rides to excited guests of all ages!

North Georgia Live Steamers invite you and all those who love trains to come out and ride trains with us on Saturday, May 9th, from 1:00 - 4:30 p.m. We will be opening for our second public train ride day of the 2026 season, and look forward to seeing you and all the different types of trains that will be operating on the Conyers & Hightower Trail Railroad.

Cost is $2 per person per ride on the railroad. Must be at least 18 months old or older. Sorry, expectant mothers are not allowed to ride on the railroad. We do NOT accept debit/credit cards.
