Union Pacific 822 Switcher

At the end of January 2024 one of our members took delivery this beautiful UP switcher built by Backyard Train Company out of Denver Colorado. During the February 3,2024 club meeting this locomotive operated on the railroad for the first time. Looking forward to seeing this railroad around the railroad for years to come.

NGLS Electric Switcher

A few years ago, a small two axel electric switcher was donated to the club. In December 2023 a plan was developed, and work has begun on restoring and upgrading the electric switcher so it can be used for light duty service around the railroad. Dave Levy is taking this project on and look forward to updates from him in 2024.

1947 B&O Chessie System

This GP-40 was built by Gene L. for his wife Joan. This locomotive took about 9 months to build and was modeled after an HO scale GP-40 and scaled up to 1/8 scale. Gene had a sheet metal shop form the body panels and then he welded it all together. He also built the trucks which are powered by a 16 HP Briggs and Straton twin V engine turning a hydro static pump transferring power to the hydraulic motors on each truck.

This locomotive is modeled after a 2-axle, 30-ton Davenport diesel (battery powered), was the only narrow gauge diesel locomotive that the Rio Grande actually owned. (They tried several Army diesel on the narrow gauge lines, but never owned any of them.) The unit, purchased from the Sumpter Valley in 1963, produced 160hp from its Caterpillar D17000 engine, with power coupled to the wheels through a mechanical transmission.

The unit was used to switch the Durango yard from its purchase in 1963 until the abandonment of the San Juan Extension in 1970. At that point, it was sold to the Roaring Camp & Big Trees near Santa Cruz, California. Last running in the early 1970s, the engine was eventually sold to the Colorado Railroad Museum in 1984.

The engine is preserved at the Colorado Railroad Museum today, and was returned to operation in June 2009.

Davenport Locomotive Works of Davenport, IA, produced all manner of industrial locomotives. R.M.I.'s 2 1/2" scale models are based on Davenport's 25-35 ton units. These locomotives are built in both 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 configurations, as were the originals. Our units are offered in both electric and gas/hydraulic versions.
